What are eye examinations?

Comprehensive eye examinations are detailed visits with your optometrist that involve a series of tests for your eye health and vision. Before starting any tests during an eye exam at Elite Eye Care, Dr. Yakubov and the team review your health and medical history. They also ask about your family’s health history.

After your intake questionnaire, the team can start the tests and exam. They may:

  • iconMeasure your visual acuity
  • iconMeasure the pressure inside your eyes
  • iconPerform an eye muscle test
  • iconCheck for refractive errors
  • iconEvaluate your visual field
  • iconUse lights and imaging instruments to see inside your eyes after dilating them

Toward the end of the exam, Dr. Yakubov and the team discuss their findings with you. They can make recommendations for treatments you may need and update your prescription for glasses or contact lenses.

What do eye examinations look for?

Eye examinations can detect many eye diseases and degenerative conditions, as well as refractive errors that affect the clarity of your vision. With so many steps, the exam tells Dr. Yakubov and the team valuable information about your eye function.

Since many eye conditions share similar symptoms, getting a comprehensive eye exam is essential to the accuracy of your diagnosis. The team then directs you to treatments and assistive devices to improve any symptoms you experience.

The many tests in a comprehensive eye exam at Elite Eye Care can detect:

  • iconGlaucoma
  • iconCataracts
  • iconMacular degeneration
  • iconDry eye
  • iconDiabetic retinopathy
  • iconAstigmatism
  • iconHyperopia

When do I need an eye examination?

Most experts recommend getting a comprehensive eye exam roughly every one or two years. You can start getting them in childhood. If your risk for certain eye diseases is exceptionally high, you may need eye exams more often than the general population.

Dr. Yakubov and the Elite Eye Care team might recommend more frequent exams if you:

  • iconHave diabetes
  • iconAre overweight or obese
  • iconHave had eye surgery
  • iconHave a family history of eye diseases
  • iconInjured your eye in the past
  • iconWear glasses or contact lenses

You should also schedule an eye exam if you notice new or worsening changes in your vision, such as blurriness, flashes, floaters, or declining color vision.
