Causes of Lazy Eye (Amblyopia) in Kids

Lazy eye, or amblyopia, occurs when a child's brain favors one eye over another. This can lead to vision problems in the weaker eye.

Common causes of lazy eye include:

Muscle imbalance (strabismus): This is the most common cause. It occurs when the eyes do not align properly, causing them to cross in or out. The brain favors the stronger eye, ignoring the weaker one.

Refractive errors: Severe nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can blur vision in one eye. The brain then favors the clearer eye.

Deprivation amblyopia: Less common but more severe. Occurs when something physically blocks vision in one eye, like a cataract or droopy eyelid.

It is important to catch lazy eye early as treatment is most effective in children. Regular eye exams are crucial for detecting the condition.

Risk factors associated with lazy eye include:

  • Premature birth
  • Small size at birth
  • Family history
  • Developmental disabilities

How to fix lazy eye in kids

While treating eye conditions such as lazy eye, it is important to help your damaged eye developed normally. Initial treatment measures may include, glasses, contact lenses and eye patches.

The early you get the treatment, the better outcome. However, it is also possible to get the treatment even if your older.

Glasses/ Contact Lenses

If your child has a lazy eye because you’re nearsighted or farsighted, or have astigmatism in one eye, buy glasses and contact lenses at Elite Eye Care.

Eye Drops

Eye Drops are an effective way to treat eye conditions. Drops may use once or twice a day to cloud your eyes in healthy vision. Before using any eye drops, ensure to consult with eye care experts.

Surgery

Strabismic amblyopia is often treated with strabismus surgery to align the eyes. This procedure is usually followed by additional treatment approaches such as an eye patch on the stronger eye, atropine eye drops, and/or eye therapy exercises to strengthen the weaker eye. In some circumstances, multiple strabismus surgeries may be necessary.

Deprivation amblyopia is typically treated with an operating room operation, such as cataract surgery, droopy eyelid surgery, or corneal scar excision.
